Enterprise Messaging Gateway Management

A Thesis on Network Management

Roberto Cosenza

Abstract

The goal of this thesis is to extend the management capabilities of a commercial SMS gateway: the EMG (Enterprise Messaging Gateway). EMG is a software gateway that interconnects SMSCs (SMS Centers), providing routing and message conversion services.

This thesis includes two parts. The first part consists of extending the monitoring capabilities of the EMG. The objective is to offer EMG managers a standard interface to monitor it. Considering this, the election was the SNMP framework, which is ubiquitous nowadays. A new MIB was designed for this purpose. In addition, a SNMP agent supporting this MIB was designed and implemented. The agent is currently commercially available as an EMG extension.

The second area of work consists of providing the EMG with congestion control capabilities. A policy-based approach was adopted. The proposal permits an SMS operator to define dynamically the maximum acceptable loss of messages of a non-guaranteed SMS service class, thereby controlling the trade-off between minimal message loss and maximum throughput in an SMS system. A Linux-based prototype was implemented as a proof of concept.
